For 2007, the Range Rover receives several upgrades. Terrain Response, with five driver-selectable settings, is now standard on all models; an electronically-controlled, infinitely-variable locking rear differential is optional on HSE and standard on the Supercharged model; and there is an electronic parking brake, triple-laminated windshield, driver’s knee airbag and integrated whiplash reduction system. The interior has been redesigned, with more stowage space, more wood and metal trim, and improved switchgear; there is a new, quieter, higher-flow climate control system; and there are new heated and cooled front seats (cooled seats are optional on HSE).
The Range Rover comes in two models: the HSE uses a 4.4-litre V8, while the Supercharged (S/C) model carries a supercharged 4.2-litre V8. Both use a six-speed automatic transmission with manual mode, and include permanent four-wheel drive. The Terrain Response system allows drivers to adjust the vehicle automatically into one of five modes, for general driving, grass/gravel/snow, mud/ruts, sand, and rock crawl.
Features on the HSE include 19-inch alloy wheels, bi-Xenon lights, rain-sensing wipers with heated windshield, front and rear fog lamps, HomeLink garage door opener, keyless entry, power windows, power sunroof, Harman/Kardon Logic7 premium auto system, Bluetooth telephone integration system, DVD-based navigation system, three-zone automatic climate control, heated seats and steering wheel, 12-way driver and 10-way power passenger adjustment with driver memory, leather-wrapped power tilt and telescopic wheel, deep-tinted glass, front and rear park distance control, power folding heated mirrors, 60/40 folding rear seat and integral Class III trailer tow hitch receiver.
The HSE can be upgraded with a Luxury Interior Package, which includes features standard on the S/C: 14-way power cooled and heated seats, premium leather upholstery and dash, dark or light 12-piece wood trim, adaptive front lighting system, auto-dimming exterior mirrors and cargo net.
The S/C model adds mesh-design front grille and power vents, 20-inch alloy wheels, unique badging, premium leather interior, Brembo front brakes and adaptive front lighting.
The flagship of the Land Rover line, the Range Rover is a rarity among SUVs: it’s one of the more luxurious on the market, and yet it really can hold its own in the worst off-road situations. Of course, most owners will never get even close to tackling sand dunes in Africa, but it’s nice to know that, even though you’re coddled in ventilated seats and a 710-watt stereo, you could.
